Kenya’s Kevin Kiptum Breaks the World Record in Chicago on Sunday

Kevin Kiptum

Kevin Kiptum, a Kenyan long-distance runner, breaks the world record for completing the men’s marathon at the Bank of America Chicago Marathon in 2:00:35. He beat Eliud Kipchoge’s previous record by 34 seconds. He became the first man in the history of marathons to achieve this brilliance.

Kelvin Kiptum said, “A world record was not planned today, but I am really happy,” said Kiptum post-race. “I came to Chicago to run fast and it’s amazing to see this (world record) time in front of me.”

The 23-year-old added that this was his first time in Chicago and he had heard before that it’s a flat course, so he wanted to try it by himself. He also said he was absolutely happy with how it ended. After him finished Benson Kipruto, three minutes and 27 seconds later, and third came Bashir Abdi of Belgium. Kenya’s John Korir came home fourth and was the third in the top five to finish the marathon.
