Official Transition: Sam Altman Exits, OpenAI’s Mira Murati Takes the Helm in 2023

On 17th November 2023, OpenAI’s board of directors confirmed the news that Sam Altman, OpenAI’s CEO will be replaced on an interim basis by technology chief Mira Murati.

A deliberate review process was conducted by the company and hence they realized that Sam Altman wasn’t consistent in his communications and no longer did they have the confidence that he could lead the company toward success.

Greg Brockman who is the OpenAI’s president will be stepping down as the chairman. However, he will be reporting to the CEO.

On Friday, Sam Altman put a post on X regarding him stepping down as the CEO of OpenAI however not confirming any accusations that the company made. He pretty much loved working with the form and his team which he conveyed in his post.

OpenAI’s board includes independent directors such as Adam D’Angelo, CEO of Quora, Helen Toner from the Georgetown Center for Security and Emerging Technology, and technology entrepreneur Tasha McCauley, along with Chief Scientist Ilya Sutskever.

Mira Murati has been appointed as the technology chief. And the company Is all praises for her saying that she is exceptionally qualified for stepping into the new role of interim CEO. And that the company is confident that she’ll be able to lead OpenAI very well during the transition.

OpenAI ranked on CNBC’s Disruptor 50 list this year into the mainstream right after its AI chatbot ChatGPT became an instant hit after its release in 2022.

ChatGPT is a service where user can convert simple text into creative conversation. This compelled big tech companies such as Alphabet and Meta to step up their investments in generative AI.

Microsoft is committed to Mira and their team as AI is being brought to their customers.
