Sam Neill in Jurassic Park

You may know Sam Neill as the ruggedly handsome scientist Dr. Alan Grant in Jurassic Park, but his role in that film is just one of many memorable performances he’s given over his career.
As an actor, he’s appeared in films like Dead Calm and The Hunt for Red October–and even had a small part in Mad Max: Fury Road as Max Rockatansky’s father (his character only appears briefly). But it was Jurassic Park that really made him famous worldwide–and it wasn’t just because of the dinosaurs either!

Sam Neill’s Health Battle

Sam Neill is an actor and director who has starred in many films, including Jurassic Park and The Piano. He was diagnosed with blood cancer at age 66, but he’s doing well now thanks to early detection.

Here’s his story: Sam Neill was diagnosed with chronic lymphocytic leukemia (CLL) at age 66. CLL is a type of cancer that affects white blood cells in the bone marrow, causing them to grow abnormally fast or die out too quickly. It’s often called “smoldering” because it can go undetected for years before symptoms appear–and by then it may be too late for treatment options like chemotherapy or radiation therapy to work effectively.

Sam Neill’s Memoir

The 75-year-old Jurassic Park star started writing vignettes from his life, a way to keep himself off negative thoughts about his illness while undergoing treatment last year. He has named his Memoir, ‘Did I Ever Tell You This?’.

“The thing is, I’m a crook. Possibly dying. I may have to speed this up.” these are the opening lines of his Memoir he said in an interview with The Guardian

He added, “I found myself with nothing to do,” Neill said in interview. “And I’m used to working. I love working. I love going to work. I love being with people every day and enjoying the human company and friendship and all these things. And suddenly I was deprived of that. And I thought, ‘what am I going to do?’

Furthermore, he said, “I never had any intention to write a book. But as I went on and kept writing, I realized it was actually sort of giving me a reason to live and I would go to bed thinking, ‘I’ll write about that tomorrow … that will entertain me.’ And so it was a lifesaver really because I couldn’t have gone through that with nothing to do, you know.”

He also said, “I can’t pretend that the last year hasn’t had its dark moments,” he said. “But those dark moments throw the light into sharp relief, you know, and have made me grateful for every day and immensely grateful for all my friends. Just pleased to be alive.”

Sam Neill clarifies that this isn’t a cancer Memoir. This illness just became a spiral thread throughout the narrative.
